Lexis · v4.2

An eReader
that reads
back.

2 million open titles, classroom-grade read-aloud, and dyslexia-friendly type, in one quiet reading room.

Lexis is an eReader built for adult literacy programs and primary classrooms across Australia. Word-level highlighting that follows the voice. Six narration voices. Full-text search across the open canon. Free for any school, library or community organisation.

Overview

Reading practice, quietly.

Lexis is built for the kid who’s nine and embarrassed to read aloud in class, the adult learner returning to literacy at fifty-three, the senior whose eyes can’t do small print anymore. Same surface, very different needs.

For learners

The voice follows the word.

Word-level highlighting, sentence-level recap, paragraph-level pause. A natural narration voice reads while the eye learns the shape of the word. Dyslexia-friendly typeface, line-spacing and colour-tint settings ship as defaults, not buried in preferences.

For teachers

A class-set in one click.

Assign a chapter, a poem, a short story to thirty learners at once. See where attention drops, who finished, who fell behind, without asking for hands. Privacy: aggregate-only by default; class-level or learner-level requires explicit consent.

For libraries

The open canon , free.

Two million public-domain and CC-licensed titles, indexed and searchable to the line. Run reading clubs, literacy nights, grandparent-reading programs, without a per-seat licence and without surveillance metrics on participants.

The interface

Three views of one reading session.

A learner working through a short story, the catalogue search that found it, and the accessibility settings tuned for them.

Chapter 1 · The Yellow Wallpaper

It is very seldom that mere ordinary people…

It is very seldom that mere ordinary people like John and myself secure ancestral halls for the summer. A colonial mansion, a hereditary estate, I would say a haunted house, and reach the height of romantic felicity, but that would be asking too much of fate!

Still I will proudly declare that there is something queer about it. Else, why should it be let so cheaply? And why have stood so long untenanted?

John laughs at me, of course, but one expects that in marriage. John is practical in the extreme. He has no patience with faith, an intense horror of superstition, and he scoffs openly at any talk of things not to be felt and seen and put down in figures.

p.5 “ancestral halls”, what does this mean? Look up “ancestral”.
p.8 “hereditary”, passed down through family.
p.12 “he scoffs openly”, he laughs at it. Doesn’t take it seriously.
Word-level narration in six voices, with dyslexia-friendly type on by default.

Capabilities

Capabilities.

Nine capabilities. All included on the free not-for-profit tier.

01 · Catalogue

2M titles, full-text search

Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, the Internet Archive, partner publishers and Open Library, indexed to the line. Search returns the passage, not just the book.

02 · Read-aloud

Word-level narration

Six natural narration voices. Word-level highlighting follows the speech. Pause-at-punctuation respects commas, full stops, ellipses.

03 · Type

Dyslexia-friendly defaults

OpenDyslexic and Lexie Readable shipped on day one. Adjustable line-height, letter-spacing, page tint and word-ruler. Designed with the Australian Dyslexia Association.

04 · Privacy

On-device by default

Reading positions, annotations, highlights stay on the device. Class-level analytics require explicit opt-in. No third-party trackers, ever.

05 · Classes

Class-set assignment

Assign a chapter to thirty learners at once. See completion, attention drop-off and shared annotations. Per-learner detail only with consent.

06 · Comprehension

Glossary & recap

Tap a word for an age-appropriate definition. End-of-chapter recap in plain English, with three optional questions. No correctness scoring, reading isn’t a quiz.

07 · Offline

Works offline

Download a title for offline reading and narration. Cached audio survives an unstable connection, useful in regional schools and on long bus rides.

08 · Annotate

Highlights, notes, flags

Highlight a passage, write a margin note, flag a word for the teacher. Notes export as Markdown or .pdf. Shared annotations on consent.

09 · Free

Free for not-for-profits

Schools, libraries, community organisations, refugee literacy programs, free with no seat cap. Commercial publishers fund the platform via paid catalogue partnerships.
